Pitcher of Life Improved Water Filter Pitcher Review

Alkaline water filter pitchers provide an easy and convenient way to have alkaline water right in the comfort of your home without really spending too much. They add minerals to your tap water and raise its pH. Moreover, the best alkaline water pitchers do as well remove most of the common contaminants found in tap water. They not only improve the quality of your water but also make it clean and safe to drink.

In our review today, we focus on the Pitcher of Life Alkaline water filter pitcher, which is made by Pitcher of Life, a company that was founded in 2012 and produces various water filtration systems from whole house units to this alkaline water filter pitcher.

This is their newest model and it does offer multiple amazing features that set it apart from other alkaline water filter pitchers on the market. The first is the advanced 6-stage filtration system which effectively alkalizes the water and removes a wide range of harmful contaminants. Besides that, it’s able to add additional health benefits to the water that greatly enhance its quality.

This Pitcher of Life Alkaline water filter pitcher also offers a large water holding capacity and it’s relatively easy to use. It even has a filter life indicator/display that lets you set the number of users. The unit is solidly built and easy to assemble and maintain. Users were really impressed with it, except for the lifespan of the filter, which is a bit short.

In this post, we’ll look at everything about this pitcher, including its performance, filtration speed, capacity, and ease of use. So, read along to find out more as we dig into the details.

Filtration Performance

The filtration system of the Pitcher of Life Alkaline water filter pitcher is made up of six stages that consist of filter gauze, ion exchange resin, alkaline mineral balls, activated carbon, far infrared ceramic balls, and a polypropylene pad.

These multiple filtration media provide an effective water treatment solution that clears the common contaminants found in municipal water, such as chlorine, heavy metals, and many other harmful pollutants. The media also raise the pH level of the water and add back beneficial minerals. They as well soften the water and improve its antioxidant properties, making it healthy and beneficial to the body.

The filter gauze forms the first stage of filtration and it’s a woven metal wire that helps stop the large particles and sediments like debris, sand, scale, and rust lingering in the water in order to create room for proper circulation of the water during the subsequent filtration stages.

The ion exchange resin makes up the second filtration stage and it effectively softens the water by removing the hardness ions (Ca2+ and Mg2+). These minerals are stripped away from the water as they make contact with the surface of the ion exchange resin beads when the water flows through them.

Besides removing the hardness ions, the resin equally removes about 90% of heavy metals present in the water, including lead, mercury, and copper.

The fourth stage features the alkaline mineral balls which are formulated with all-natural minerals that substantially raise the pH of the water, making it alkaline and healthy for the body. They raise the pH level to about 8.5 to 9.5, based though on the alkalinity of your source water. The balls as well infuse the water with trace amounts of essential/beneficial minerals such as calcium, magnesium, and potassium, which further improve its quality.

These mineral balls also change the oxidation-reduction potential (ORP) of the water by decreasing it hence making it more negative (although it’s not specified to what levels). This gives the water more antioxidant properties such that it’s capable of neutralizing the cell-damaging free radicals and other toxins in the body.

In the fourth stage, we have the activated carbon media and this effectively removes the chlorine content (nearly up to 99%) in the water as well as most of the other chemicals, including VOCs, pesticides, herbicides, and pharmaceuticals. It also aids in getting rid of all the unpleasant smells and tastes caused by chlorine and these chemicals.

The far-infrared ceramic balls sit right behind the activated carbon media and they emit far-infrared radiations, which have powerful detoxifying and healing effects. They not only help inhibit the growth of free radicals but also activate the water molecules, which in turn help improve both metabolic functions and blood circulation. They generally help strengthen the immune system and improve the overall health of the body.

The final filtration stage is the polypropylene pad at the bottom of the filter and it repeats the mechanical filtration by filtering all the smaller sediments and fine particles that passed through the filter gauze in stage one or collected from the minerals balls within the filter.

All this culminates in cleaner, safer, and healthy alkaline water that’s quite beneficial to the body than your regular tap water or standard filtered water. The alkaline pH, essential minerals, powerful antioxidant properties, and high negative ORP offer several health benefits such as immune system support, anti-aging properties, and improved hydration – most alkaline water filter pitchers and store-bought alkaline water don’t have any antioxidant benefits.

Users generally reported noticing a significant difference in the water quality. They mentioned that the water tastes and smells much better. No chlorine or metallic taste, or any aftertaste. Several users reported too noticing increased levels of energy after taking the alkalized water from the Pitcher of Life Alkaline water filter pitcher for some time.

Many also mentioned that the water is very clear from the onset, which is great considering that small black particles from most carbon filters are often found in filtered water. The fine PP pad within the filter effectively prevents the black particles and other fine sediments from passing through, which leaves you with alkaline water that’s clear and clean.

However, you’ll have to drink the filtered water within 24 hours to benefit from its antioxidant properties as they only last roughly 18 to 24 hours. The alkaline properties last a little longer though, approximately one to two weeks.

Besides that, the filter system is not suited for use on untreated water or water that’s biologically unsafe. The filtration media are not able to kill or remove harmful microorganisms like bacteria, viruses, and parasites. You can only use it to filter municipal water or treated well water.

Capacity and Using the Pitcher

The Pitcher of Life Alkaline water filter pitcher offers a pretty decent holding capacity. It can hold up to 3.8 liters of filtered water at a time. However, users claim that it only holds 2.5 liters, not the specified 3.8 liters. The discrepancy is in the unfiltered water reservoir/tank which holds the extra 1.3 liters capacity.

That said though, the 2.5 liters is still a decent capacity as it’s equal to roughly 10 cups of filtered water at a time, which is enough for a small family of one to three people.

The 1.3-liter capacity of the unfiltered water reservoir is relatively small compared to that of most other water filter pitchers, but still, though you won’t actually have to refill it frequently in order to get the pitcher to full capacity – it will take just one refill.

It’s simple to fill the reservoir. The lid has a small pour-through opening that you just pop open and quickly fill the top reservoir under your kitchen faucet. You don’t have to take off the whole lid and the opening has a cover, so dust and other particles won’t be falling into the water.

The whole unit is not transparent though. Only the lower pitcher is made of clear plastic. The top tank is opaque, so it’s a bit of a challenge to tell how much water is left once you fill it – the only way to know is to open the cover on the lid and check, which is rather inconvenient and can lead to overfilling when pouring water into the tank.

The good thing is that it takes just a few minutes for the water to go through the filter when the tank is filled, meaning you won’t have to wait too long to enjoy your alkaline water. The flow does get slower, though, over time, especially when the amount of sediments in your source water is high.

Pouring the water is easy. The spout has a flap that covers it to prevent dirt from getting into the already filtered water in the Pitcher of Life Alkaline water filter pitcher. Unlike in other water filter pitchers, this flap opens up easily when pouring (you don’t have to hold it open when pouring).

It’s neither stiff nor clunky, so the water flows out without getting obstructed, thereby allowing for a clean pour. There’s no splashing or spilling when pouring, which is often the case with many water filter pitchers that have a flap on the spout.

Furthermore, the flap is securely held in place, hence it can’t pop off and fall inside the top reservoir. The spout itself is narrow, hence the water pours out in a clean and streamlined manner such that you get to easily pour into a water bottle with no spillage.

The other good thing is that the lid snaps tightly in place when you set it – it doesn’t come off when pouring. Spillage from lids and them coming off when pouring are common complaints when it comes to pitchers, so it’s a big plus that the lid of this pitcher stays put when you tilt it to pour the filtered water.

Moreover, the company has designed the lid such that it extends into the handle which allows you to place your thumb right on top of it when your pour, ensuring it remains in place, even if you tilt the pitcher completely. It can only come off when you still have the top reservoir filled with unfiltered water as you pour.

The handle itself is sturdy and ergonomic too. It’s large and offers a nice, soft but secure grip, making it comfortable to hold. It doesn’t cause much fatigue, even when the pitcher is full and heavy.

Assembly and Maintenance

Assembling this unit is simple. It comes in four pieces, the main pitcher/jug, the top tank/reservoir, the lid, and the filter. The only assembly you’ll need to do is put these four parts together which isn’t a challenge at all as they easily fit together.

You just insert the filter into the reservoir (ensuring it sits properly to avoid leakage of unfiltered water into the pitcher) and then fit it inside the pitcher. From there you place the lid on top, ensuring it’s tightly in place such that it won’t come off when you pour.

Once everything is set, all you need to do is fill the top reservoir, allow the water to filter through, and you’re good to go. It won’t take you more than 10 minutes to set up the unit and have your alkaline water ready.

The only major maintenance required is changing the filter cartridge, which you are likely to do more often because the filter has a short lifespan. It has the capacity to filter up to 40 gallons or 300 liters of water upon which it becomes ineffective. On average, one filter can last for about two months if your water source isn’t too bad or if you are drinking around 3 liters of filtered water per day.

To put it simply, the filter lifespan is entirely dependent on the amount of water you drink per day as well as the quality of your water source. If you are four people, drinking 3 liters of water each per day and your water source isn’t too contaminated, you may need to replace the filter once every month. If the water is highly contaminated, then you may have to replace it more frequently.

The process of changing the filter itself is straightforward. You just take off the lid, remove the already-used filter, insert the new one, and then put back the lid. It’s that simple.

Built into the lid of the pitcher is a digital counter with a display. You don’t have to guess when to change the filter as it automatically indicates the remaining filter life. It even has a button that allows you to set the number of users, upon which it will determine the filter lifespan and monitor it to display the filter’s remaining service life or capacity. So, you always get to know in advance when the filter needs changing.

Build Quality

The Pitcher of Life Alkaline water filter pitcher does look quite appealing. It has a simple design but the dark blue lid and handle complement very well the clear pitcher and white reservoir and filter housing, making the unit attractive such that it would look good on any kitchen counter. The pitcher equally has a slim profile. It would fit easily in most large fridge door bins and won’t take up much space on the counter.

The build quality is also impressive. The main pitcher is a thick, strong ABS plastic that’s BPA-free. It’s not likely to break when dropped. The lid is also very rigid and durable. The handle is thick too, and not likely to break easily. The whole unit is generally strong and durable. It will stand up very well to everyday use.

Final Remarks

This is a great option if you want an effective and convenient alkaline water filter pitcher. It’s able to quickly deliver alkaline water with a pH level of 8.5 to 9.5, while at the same time adding trace amounts of essential minerals and other beneficial elements and properties that make the water healthy. It’s also able to efficiently remove most of the common contaminants found in tap water including sediments, chlorine, and heavy metals.

You can consider it too if you want a water filter pitcher that’s capable of softening water. It has an ion exchange resin that works effectively to remove hardness minerals from the water.

We equally liked that it offers a decent capacity and filters the water relatively fast, plus the fact that it doesn’t have most of the common problems found on other water filter pitchers like the lid coming off when pouring or the spout flap obstructing the water flow leading to spillage.

It’s generally a well-built unit that can last for a long period. The only thing that doesn’t have a long lifespan is the filter cartridge. However, Pitcher of Life does offer replacement cartridges that come in a pack of three, which is enough to last you 6 months before you can think of getting another replacement.
